The community of Mabopane block X complains about illegal dumping near the library and in an abandoned area behind the library.
Illegal dumping has been happening here because there is sometimes a delay in garbage collection, so people put their garbage near the library. People living near the library have tried telling them to stop, but they just keep doing it at night while everyone is asleep. This is not only about throwing things illegally, but also about people’s health as they enjoy playing or chilling at the gym.
“Dumping things here does not sit well with us, as it is near our houses. We try to speak with people when we see them, that they should stop dumping things here, but they do it anyway,” said a resident living near the library who did not want to be named.
Behind the library, there is a patch of grass and trees that make the place look like a bush. People do not feel safe about that because that place can be used to increase crime.

The abandoned place behind the library was to be a community recreation area many years ago, as promised by the then Minister of Sport. People were very happy, hoping the kids would play near their homes, but it became a place that threatened the community.
“This situation does not sit well with me because this was intended to be a sports and recreation site, but it has turned into a dumping ground. Even our parents do not feel safe here, as the area is unreliable, the streetlights are not working, and there is no police presence,” said a resident of Block X who also did not want to be named.
The community is pleading with the municipality to prioritise their safety and health.
Contacted, the City of Tshwane stated that it would respond once it had obtained further clarity on the matter. However, by the time of publication, no response had been received within the stipulated deadline.
This is a developing story.
