Residents of Mabopane urged to conserve water as reservoir levels dip

Mabopane residents have been advised to conserve water in response to declining reservoir levels. Concerns are growing that the region could face water shortages in the coming weeks.

A drop in water levels in local reservoirs has prompted local authorities to encourage households in Mabopane to reduce consumption and store water while supply is available. Community members are requested to take simple measures to reduce water use, including closing taps tightly, fixing leaks quickly, using buckets instead of hosepipes for gardening, and collecting rainwater.

In the event of a water supply interruption, households are encouraged to store clean drinking water in sealed containers. This warning targets all residents, but mostly elderly people, large families, schools, and clinics, who use higher volumes of water daily and are more vulnerable should the supply be interrupted.

High demand, ageing infrastructure, and seasonal shortages during dry winter months are factors contributing to the water supply challenges. According to community leaders backing the call, residents must work together to protect water supplies.

Authorities note that the next two weeks are critical because no rain is forecasted in the short term. In the event that water consumption does not decrease, the municipality may have to implement water-shedding schedules similar to load shedding. This will be done through timed cut-offs in different zones.

Residents can report leaks and burst pipes to the City hotline to help reduce water loss across the network and protect the remaining limited supply.
