Soshangaan Primary School and Letlotlo Secondary School in Mabopane are not in good condition to accommodate kids and teachers.
Soshangaan Primary School has roofless toilets, and the school grounds are overgrown, creating an unsafe environment for the children. The school has also been vandalized, and other facilities are without electricity.
Letlotlo Secondary School has leaking roofs and no windows. Kids are having it hard on cold and rainy days. Parents went to the school to temporarily close the windows so their kids could have an education without catching a cold and concentrate while at it.
According to a source that did not want to be named, Letlotlo Secondary has more than 200 learners in grade 8, and only 20 passed. “Can you imagine grade 8 has 5 classes, and each class has 50 or so learners, which makes the number more than 200, but only 20 passed,” said the source.
Spokesperson for the GDE, Mr Onwabile Lubhelwana, confirmed that infrastructure problems are occurring in schools and stated that other schools are experiencing the same issue.
“Vandalism and lack of electricity have been reported to GDE, and the school was awaiting funding to assist with repairs. Windows at Letlotlo are also to be repaired as Schools have received maintenance money,” he stated.
He further explained that safety committees are assisting School Governing Bodies (SGBs) in addressing risk issues at schools on an ongoing basis.
Parents are pleading for the schools to be taken seriously because the kids’ education is important to them and also to the kids.
